POPE LEO XIV CALLS FOR PEACE, CONDEMNS VIOLENCE AT PALM SUNDAY MASS

 

Pope Leo XIV has called for global peace and strongly condemned violence and war during his Palm Sunday Mass at St. Peter’s Square.

 

Addressing thousands of worshippers, the Pope described Jesus Christ as the “King of Peace” who rejects violence and conflict. Reflecting on biblical teachings, he recalled how Jesus instructed His disciples to renounce violence, emphasizing that “those who live by the sword shall perish by the sword.”

 

The pontiff noted that even in the face of suffering, Jesus chose a path of humility and sacrifice, allowing Himself to be “led like a lamb to the slaughter.” According to him, this reflects the true nature of God as one who rejects violence and embraces peace.

 

Citing the prophet Isaiah, the Pope warned against hypocrisy in worship, saying, “Even though you make many prayers, I will not listen: your hands are full of blood,” stressing that God does not accept the prayers of those who promote or engage in war.

 

He further declared that Jesus cannot be used to justify violence, insisting that faith must never be manipulated to support conflict. “Jesus is the King of Peace, who rejects war, whom no one can use to justify war,” he said.

 

Lamenting the suffering of victims of oppression and violence around the world, the Pope issued a passionate appeal for compassion and unity. “Christ, King of Peace, cries out again from His cross: God is love! Have mercy! Lay down your weapons! Remember that you are brothers and sisters!” he urged.

 

The Mass concluded with a prayer inspired by Tonino Bello, asking the Virgin Mary to intercede for peace, that the devastation of war may fade away and that the tears of victims of violence may soon be wiped away.
