Nigerian actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has set a new record in Nollywood with her latest movie, Behind The Scenes, which has emerged as the highest-grossing Nigerian film of 2025.

 

The film has raked in an astonishing ₦2.103 billion within just one month of its cinema release, making it the first Nollywood production to cross the ₦2 billion mark in record time. Distributed by FilmOne Entertainment, the movie also broke five opening-weekend records, including the biggest single-day earnings on Boxing Day, with ₦129.5 million.

 

In an official statement, FilmOne Entertainment celebrated the milestone, saying:

 

“Behind the Scenes has officially broken and shattered records, hitting over 2 billion at the box office and becoming the first Nollywood film in Africa to cross the ₦2 billion mark. This is also the highest-grossing Nollywood film of all time in Africa, the UK, and Ireland, and makes @funkejenifaakindele the first filmmaker to rank #1 at the box office in Africa for three consecutive years. She is now West Africa’s highest-grossing filmmaker, writer, director, and producer of all time.”

 

The success of Behind The Scenes further cements Akindele’s dominance in the industry, marking her third movie to surpass the ₦1 billion box office milestone and reinforcing her reputation as West Africa’s most commercially successful filmmaker.

 

Industry analysts attribute the film’s strong performance to strategic advance screenings, a star-studded cast, and a relatable story that explores themes of family bonds, loyalty, and societal expectations.

 

The movie features standout performances from Scarlet Gomez, Iyabo Ojo, Destiny Etiko, Tobi Bakre, and Uche Montana, which helped it resonate with audiences across multiple markets.
