Benue State, fondly called the “Food Basket of the Nation,” is a land rich in resources, clergy, intellectuals, and vibrant youths. Yet, in this age of globalization, many still struggle to embrace the truth that only unity and a formidable team spirit can unlock the state’s full potential.

Much like the biblical account of Prophet Samuel waiting for David’s arrival before anointing him as the chosen leader, so too has the emergence of Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, Executive Governor of Benue State, signaled a divine appointment. Long before his election, Alia was seen as a role model for aspiring youths — a leader spiritually and morally prepared to serve his people and their fatherland.

The path to his political rise bears the fingerprints of notable figures, none more prominent than Sen. George Akume, whose name will remain etched as a key architect of Alia’s emergence. The reconciliation between Akume and Alia has further emphasized the timeless truth that supporting one leader often strengthens the capacity of another. Still, some citizens remain hesitant, unwilling to accept the need for collective backing in the pursuit of progress.

Governor Alia’s tenure has also inspired the likes of Engr. Jeffry Kuraun, a vibrant young leader whose aspirations point to a future of sustained governance built on the people’s “Yes Father” approval. Across Nigeria, the old politics of mere power-sharing without tangible development is slowly fading, replaced by the expectation of leadership with vision, accountability, and a human face.

In Benue, the scars of past bloodshed remain fresh. Many recall the years when herdsmen attacks left the state under siege. Governor Alia’s boldness in bringing these tragedies to national attention drew the sympathy of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who chose dialogue and unity over declaring a State of Emergency — a decision aimed at delivering lasting peace.

Yet, as with all progress, opposition and envy persist. Drawing from the counsel of Sen. Adams Oshiomhole, the APC has kept its doors open to reconciliation, and Alia has embraced accountability within the party framework. President Tinubu’s visible support for Alia underscores the trust and confidence he has in the governor’s mission to free his people from mental and political bondage.

Benue’s current standing under Fr. Alia’s leadership is historic, and its citizens are urged to safeguard the gains made, resisting divisive politics that could dim the bright lights now shining on the state. The governor’s commitment to rewarding excellence — as seen in his recognition of football star Francisca Ordega with a street named in her honor, an apartment, and cash gifts — reflects his dedication to celebrating and empowering role models.

As Benue charts a new course, the call is clear: unity, peace, and collective effort remain the keys to sustaining the high tempo of progress and ensuring the “Food Basket of the Nation” continues to nourish not just Nigeria, but the dreams of its own people.
