A former Commissioner for Science and Technology in Niger State, Abubakar Katcha, has raised alarm over a shocking discovery of what he claims to be a radioactive battery embedded in his wife’s brassiere, allegedly purchased from Kure Market in Minna.

 

Katcha, speaking to journalists, narrated that the brassiere — labeled “Made in China” — was bought in preparation for their child’s naming ceremony in October 2023. Shortly after his wife began wearing the bra, she began experiencing alarming health symptoms, including swelling in her breasts and unusual brownish discharge near the nipple. According to Katcha, the symptoms persisted for months and raised fears of cancer.

 

He further explained that their newborn baby, for unknown reasons at the time, refused to breastfeed — a development that left both parents puzzled. Medical advice and antibiotic treatments were administered, and eventually, the baby resumed breastfeeding. However, during this year’s Ramadan fasting period, his wife decided to wean the child.

 

It was on May 18, 2025, while hand-washing the bra, that she reportedly discovered something odd hidden inside the fabric. Acting on instinct, she dissected the bra and uncovered a tiny battery and another small device embedded in both cups. When combined, Katcha claimed, the components emitted high radiation.

 

“It was frightening. When I examined it, I saw that both sides of the bra had these concealed objects. It’s my belief that they’re radioactive, and they could be the source of her health issues,” he said.

 

Katcha expressed deep concern over the implications of the discovery, warning that such products could pose widespread health risks to Nigerian women. He called on the federal government to urgently investigate imported consumer goods, especially intimate wear, which could be harmful.

 

“I believe there is a dangerous agenda here. These products may be deliberately laced with harmful materials to cause cancer, so women will end up relying on their medical systems and drugs. It’s a serious national security and public health issue,” he stated.

 

As of press time, neither health authorities nor the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) have responded to the allegation.
