Former Bayelsa State Commissioner of Sports, Opukiri Jones-Ere, has strongly condemned the behaviour of political activist Omoyele Sowore at the 10th edition of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon. Sowore, who participated in the race, sparked controversy when he broke protocol and sat in the VIP area reserved for Lagos State Governor Babatunde Sanwo-Olu and other top officials.

According to reports, Sowore and his entourage occupied the Governor's table after the officials left to present medals to the winners. The situation nearly escalated into a scene when Sowore refused to vacate the area. Jones-Ere expressed his disappointment and disbelief at Sowore's actions, which he deemed a "gesture of disgrace."

Meanwhile, the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon has received widespread praise for its successful organization and world-class standards. The event, which took place on February 15, 2025, attracted thousands of participants and spectators from around the globe.
