One of the standout players at this year’s Women All Stars Football Competition in Lagos, Florence Agbegbaku, has expressed her joy at being part of the event, which showcased exceptional talent and encouraged young players to shine.

Speaking about the competition organized by the Association of Nigeria Women Football Club Coaches (ANWFCC) at the Legacy Pitch of Lagos National Stadium, the Edo-born footballer, who represented Team England, described the tournament as a significant step forward in her football career.

Agbegbaku commended the high standard of the tournament and praised her team’s collective efforts. “I was lucky to be placed in Team England. We won two of our group matches and drew one,” she shared.

She emphasized the importance of teamwork, stating, “I always make up my mind before a match to give my best and encourage my teammates to play as a unit. Even when we were incomplete—playing with eight or ten players—we still managed to win because of our determination and individual qualities.”

The athlete, who has been playing football for 15 years and holds a higher institution degree, also opened up about her personal growth through the sport. Initially shy and reserved, Agbegbaku revealed that football helped her build social skills, confidence, and a sense of camaraderie.

“Football showed me I can’t do it alone; it’s a team game. This helped me come out of my shell, relate better with others, and become a better person,” she confessed.

Agbegbaku reflected on the challenges she faced early in her career, particularly opposition from her family. “After my father’s death, my mom and sisters didn’t support my desire to play football. They worried I’d change physically or become a tomboy,” she recounted.

Eventually, her family allowed her to pursue football, provided her academics didn’t suffer. “It was a compromise I respected, and I worked hard to balance both,” she said.

Agbegbaku applauded this year’s Women All Stars Competition as a platform for showcasing young talent and promoting women’s football.

“This year’s All Stars was exceptional. The exposure for young, talented players was amazing, and it gives me hope for the future of female football. I’m proud to have been part of it and gained valuable experience,” she concluded.

With her inspiring journey and dedication, Agbegbaku continues to set an example for aspiring female footballers in Nigeria.
