The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has confirmed that 281 inmates are missing after a flood damaged the Maiduguri correctional facility in Borno State. The flood, caused by the collapse of the Alau Dam, has displaced over a million people and resulted in at least 30 deaths.

NCoS spokesman Umar Abubakar stated that the service has the details of the missing inmates, including their biometrics, and is working with other security agencies to recapture them. So far, seven inmates have been recaptured and returned to custody.

In response to the flood, Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has donated N100 million to support the victims. He also visited the state governor, Prof Babagana Zulum, to announce the donation and called on his network to contribute to the relief efforts.

The flood has submerged large parts of the city, and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has been involved in rescue operations, saving over 400 individuals trapped by the floodwaters.
