Nigeria’s U17 girls, the Flamingos, began their preparations for the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup qualifiers on Sunday at the Remo Stars Sports Institute, Ikenne-Remo. They are set to face South Africa’s Bantwana in a two-legged second-round clash for a spot at Morocco 2024.

 

The Flamingos, 2022 World Cup bronze medallists, were drawn bye to the second round, while South Africa dominated Gabon with a staggering 21-2 aggregate victory in the first round.

 

NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, emphasized the importance of early preparations, acknowledging the intensity of Nigeria-South Africa encounters. “The Flamingos remain the best team in Africa and one of the best in the world. They will be adequately prepared for the challenges ahead,” he assured.

 

Meanwhile, Bantwana’s head coach, Ntombifuthi Khumalo, has called for more preparation time and reinforcements, admitting his team will need extra support to compete with Nigeria.

 

The 2024 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup, now an annual event, will take place in Morocco from October 17 to November 8, with Africa fielding five teams, including the host nation.

 

Flamingos head coach, Bankole Olowookere, has invited 30 players to camp, including key names like goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma, defenders Hannah Ibrahim and Jumai Adebayo, midfielder Shakirat Moshood, and forwards Harmony Chidi and Peace Effiong.

 

With the squad assembling in Ikenne-Remo, Nigeria aims to secure a strong position in their quest for another World Cup appearance.
