It was a solemn gathering of colleagues, friends, and members of the football community on Thursday in Gwagwalada as the remains of Coach Meshack Olatunji, popularly known as “Alomo,” were laid to rest.

 

The late Olatunji, who served as Secretary of the Gwagwalada Football Coaches Council, was widely respected for his dedication to grassroots football development. He also held the position of Chief Coach of Likeminds FC, where he played a key role in nurturing young talents and guiding the team through competitive campaigns.

 

Coach Olatunji passed away on Tuesday, March 24, leaving behind a legacy marked by passion, discipline, and commitment to the growth of football at the community level.

 

A graduate of Nasarawa State University, Keffi and the National Institute for Sports, he was also a CAF-licensed coach, a testament to his professional development and expertise in the game.

 

Until his death, Olatunji remained actively involved in football activities. He led Likeminds FC to the final of the NLO Unity Preseason Tournament held in Gwagwalada and also featured  in the final 2026 Gwagwalada Ramadan Cup with Bocknor Academy, further underscoring his unwavering commitment to the sport.

 

Tributes poured in from fellow coaches and players, many of whom described him as a mentor, motivator, and a pillar of grassroots football in the Federal Capital Territory. They noted that his contributions to the development of young players and local teams would not be forgotten.

 

As he was laid to rest, the football community reflected on the life of a man whose influence extended beyond the pitch—one who dedicated his life to shaping the future of the game at its foundation.
