Enyimba FC reignited their NPFL ambitions with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over fierce rivals Rivers United in a pulsating Matchday 24 clash at the Enyimba International Stadium, Aba.

 

A moment of brilliance from Imo Obot in the 42nd minute proved decisive, as his perfectly placed free kick left the Rivers United goalkeeper helpless, sending the home fans into wild celebration.

 

The win ended a two-game losing streak for the reigning champions, much to the delight of head coach Stanley Eguma, who dedicated the victory to the passionate Enyimba supporters.

 

“I feel very happy; it’s a sweet victory considering the magnitude of the match. For some time, we haven’t been winning, so coming back home with this victory, we are giving it to the fans as a Valentine gift,” Eguma said post-match.

 

While pleased with the result, Eguma emphasized the need for continued improvement, especially with crucial fixtures ahead.

 

The highly anticipated encounter lived up to expectations, with both sides engaged in a tactical showdown. Rivers United, managed by former Enyimba coach Finidi George, pushed hard for an equalizer but found Enyimba’s defense unyielding.

 

Finidi, full of praise for his former side, acknowledged Imo Obot’s match-winning strike, describing him as a “free-kick specialist.” Despite the setback, he urged his players to maintain their fighting spirit as they prepare for their next fixture against Akwa United in Uyo.

 

Eguma also raised concerns over Enyimba’s demanding schedule, which has seen them play multiple games in quick succession.

 

“The fixtures have not helped us at all. We’ve been traveling and playing almost every 48 hours. We just returned from Benin and played today; tomorrow, we are traveling to Katsina. It’s pressure on the team, but we have to manage and play better,” he added.

 

With momentum on their side, Enyimba now turn their attention to their Matchday 25 clash against Katsina United at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium on Wednesday.
