Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, has condemned the alarming rate of domestic violence and wife beating in Kano, which accounts for 45% of cases in nine Shari'a Courts over five years. The outspoken monarch has taken a bold stance, advising his daughters to retaliate if their husbands slap them.

Sanusi emphasized that it's unacceptable for a man to beat his wife, stating, "It just does not make sense." He recounted telling his daughters that if their husbands slap them, they should slap back, and if they don't, he'll slap them himself for not standing up for themselves.

The Emir's message goes beyond just retaliation; he advocates for teaching daughters to stand up for themselves and sons that domestic violence is never acceptable. By promoting equality and respect in relationships, Sanusi aims to eradicate the harmful cultural norms that perpetuate violence against women and girls.
