Enyimba FC Technical Adviser Stanley Eguma has hailed his side’s fighting spirit after they battled to a goalless draw against Barau FC in their 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season opener, despite being reduced to 10 men.

 

In a tension-filled encounter at the Sani Abacha Stadium on Sunday, the nine-time league champions were without seven key players but displayed remarkable resilience to deny Barau FC a dream debut win in the topflight.

 

Coach Eguma praised the discipline and commitment of his players, particularly in light of the challenging circumstances.

 

“One point is better than zero, especially considering the situation we found ourselves in,” Eguma said. “We had to adjust our original game plan, and some players featured outside their natural positions, but their commitment and discipline made the difference. I must commend their fighting spirit.”

 

Enyimba nearly took the lead in the first half when striker Bassey John broke free, but his one-on-one effort was smartly saved by Barau’s goalkeeper. The People’s Elephant were later forced into a deeper defensive stance after defender Mujeed Odufeso received a red card late in the match.

 

Eguma, one of the most experienced tacticians in the NPFL, revealed the tactical shift that helped preserve the result.

 

“We had no choice but to retreat and defend with everything once we went a man down. The boys did exactly that and I’m proud of them. We will build on this performance and target maximum points at home against Niger Tornadoes next weekend.”

 

Captain of the day, Chinedu Ufere, echoed his coach’s sentiments, crediting the team’s unity and mental strength.

 

“We knew it was going to be a tough game, but we came here with the mentality to fight. Even with all the challenges, we followed the coach’s instructions and gave everything. We fought like lions, and this point feels like a victory for us.”

 

With the curtain now raised on the 2025/26 NPFL season, Enyimba’s gritty performance away from home sends an early signal of intent: the Aba giants are ready to challenge for honours once again—regardless of adversity.
