Popular Nigerian gospel singer Emmanuel Benjamin, widely known as Eben, has revealed how a church cancelled his scheduled ministration because of his appearance in a pair of tattered jeans.

 

The award-winning singer made the disclosure during an interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, where he recounted his shock and disappointment over the incident. According to Eben, all arrangements for the church convention had been concluded before concerns were raised about his outfit.

 

Eben explained that the issue arose after members of the church committee saw his album artwork, in which he appeared wearing a shredded denim jean. Despite the jeans not exposing any part of his body or appearing indecent, the church felt the outfit was inappropriate for a gospel minister.

 

“They had already invited me for their convention, and everything was arranged. Then they saw my album artwork where I wore a shredded denim jean,” Eben said.

 

“The organiser called me, very upset, and mentioned that the committee felt they could not accept me as a minister due to the type of jeans I was wearing. They said it wasn’t suitable for a Christian.”

 

Speaking further on the podcast, Eben expressed disappointment that his appearance became the focal point rather than his message and calling. He noted that such judgments reflect how people often prioritise outward looks over faith and spiritual substance.

 

Despite the experience, the singer said he harbours no resentment, describing the incident as part of his personal and ministerial growth.

 

Having spent over 20 years in gospel ministry, Eben reflected on how misplaced priorities can sometimes overshadow the essence of worship. He urged churches to focus more on genuine worship, spiritual impact, and guiding people closer to God rather than judging ministers based on clothing choices.

 

According to him, true ministry is about transforming lives and leading people to God, not policing attire.
