Nigeria international Deborah Abiodun made her much-anticipated debut for Washington Spirit on Sunday, featuring in their 1-1 draw against the Chicago Stars at Audi Field in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL).

 

The Super Falcons midfielder, who returned to the Spirit last week following a brief loan spell with league newcomers Dallas Trinity FC, was introduced in the second half and impressed with her composure and ball distribution in midfield.

 

Abiodun’s return adds depth to a Washington Spirit side looking to strengthen their push for a playoff spot as the 2025 NWSL regular season enters a crucial phase.

 

The match saw both teams share the spoils in a competitive encounter. The hosts opened the scoring through Ashley Sanchez in the 38th minute, but Chicago responded after the break, with Alyssa Thompson slotting home the equaliser in the 62nd minute.

 

While Abiodun did not get on the scoresheet, her presence was felt as she helped stabilize the midfield and added energy in the closing stages of the game.

 

The 20-year-old has been a rising star for club and country, and her return to the Spirit is seen as a timely boost as the team prepares for a run of critical fixtures in the coming weeks.

 

Abiodun was part of Nigeria’s triumphant squad at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), and her continued development in the NWSL will be closely followed by Super Falcons fans and coaching staff alike.
