The John and Rebecca Ebokpo (JARE) Foundation, a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) has given out food items, clothing and other accessories to 100 families in Guruku 2 village, Karu, Nassarawa.

Mrs Rebecca Ebokpo, Chairperson of the Foundation, said during the distribution exercise that the Organisation was passionate about curbing hunger and reducing the plights of impoverished Communities who are facing various challenges.

“The Government has been doing its best in poverty alleviation, but cannot do everything. We are on the fifth phase of this project and we are looking to do more and touch more lives of indigent Communities.

Ebokpo, also the President of Rotary Club, Wuse 2, said the infrastructure deficit situation of the environment drew their attention to Guruku Community.

“When we came here, we saw that the children needed food, adequate healthcare, schools and there was no water supply.

“We saw that there were two classrooms in one room and pupils sit on the floor to learn. It will be good to have them have good healthcare, a good school, food and health officials to see to their healthcare,” she added

Dr John Ebokpo,Co- Founder of Jare Foundation and past President of Rotary Club of Nigeria, Wuse 2, noted that a lot was still expected from other well-meaning Nigerians and the government.

“The whole idea is to achieve zero hunger in our Country, asides what the government is doing, we all need to give back to the society, diversity is our strength.

“Despite our language and cultural barriers, we should try and give back to the society in the little way that we can.

“Government is doing a lot but I believe we can have a re-focus on what the government can do in empowering the locals to increase their crop yields.

“This can be done through the agricultural extension officers, either through Federal or State Ministry, this will help farmers to achieve more and ensure food sustainability.

According to him, Climate change is also affecting food security in Nigeria. Government can introduce adaptability measures to help increase harvest and curb climate change issues surrounding food production.

“I also suggest irrigation driven processes, it is another way the government can do something to curb hunger in Nigeria and improve food security,” he added.

Mr Jubrin Waziri, Community Head, Guruku 2, applauded the foundation for the timely gesture, adding that the community is still in need of more support especially with regards to the only school in the Community.

“We are grateful to this NGO that chose us to assist. We are facing a lot of challenges in this Community, we have only two teachers deployed here from the government to teach.

“The first school here was in 1937, but up till now, infrastructure is a big problem for the only existing one here and there is no government intervention,’’ he said.

Aishatu Adamu, a beneficiary and mother of three, said they are very excited about the show of love and prayed for God’s blessings on the Organisation.

Comrade Yusuf Husseini, a Youth Group leader said he was overwhelmed with the gesture, saying it is one gesture the Community would not forget in a hurry.

“Someone told me yesterday, I was delighted, we love it when people come like this to help our community and we are really appreciative of this,” he added.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that items distributed to the beneficiaries include; yams, potatoes, rice, spaghetti, fresh tomatoes, fresh pepper, Garri, maize, okra, clothes, shoes among others.
