Popular Nigerian comedian and actor, Okechukwu Onyegbule, widely known as Okey Bakassi, has been elected as the traditional ruler of his ancestral home, Umuihuocha Obohia Autonomous Community in Ahiazu Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State.

 

The celebrated entertainer will ascend the throne as Eze Okwe II, succeeding his forebearers in the role of custodian of the customs and traditions of his people.

 

Okey Bakassi’s selection as Eze-elect came after a thorough consultative process involving community stakeholders, who affirmed his integrity, accomplishments, and enduring ties to his homeland. His election marks a significant return to his roots, blending modern celebrity status with traditional leadership.

 

While the official date for his coronation is yet to be announced, the event is expected to draw prominent traditional rulers, political figures, religious leaders, and notable personalities from across Nigeria.

 

Born and raised in Imo State, the incoming monarch earned a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from the Rivers State University of Science and Technology. Despite his academic background, he found fame in Nigeria’s entertainment industry as a stand-up comedian and actor, gaining widespread acclaim both locally and internationally.
