…Defeat EFCC FC 1–0 to lift title in Abuja

City FC have emerged champions of the 2025 Nigeria Football Coaches Association (NFCA) FCT Chapter NNL/NLO Preseason Tournament, following a hard-fought 1–0 victory over EFCC FC in Sunday’s final at the Area 3 Football Pitch, Abuja.

The newly promoted Nigeria National League (NNL) side sealed the win courtesy of a well-taken header from Ozor Franklin in the 49th minute. After a cautious first half in which both teams struggled to break each other’s defensive setup, City FC returned from the break with renewed intensity. Their attacking pressure eventually paid off when Franklin rose highest to nod home what proved to be the decisive goal.

EFCC FC, in a bid to draw level, pressed relentlessly but City FC’s defense held firm. Towards the closing stages, City FC were handed a golden opportunity to extend their lead after an EFCC defender committed and infringement  in the box. However, EFCC’s goalkeeper pulled off a fine save to deny them from the spot, and the match ended 1–0 in favour of City FC.

Speaking after the match, City FC Head Coach Richard Yamoah commended his players’ resilience and tactical discipline throughout the competition.

“The match was not easy, but we worked very hard for this victory,” Yamoah said. “We are not necessarily better than our opponents, but we played according to our plan and remained focused. The boys deserve credit for their effort. Our preparation for the NNL season continues — this is just the beginning.”

On the losing side, EFCC FC Head Coach Kabiru Sani expressed pride in his team’s performance despite the defeat.

“Our boys played very well today, but luck was not on our side,” he said. “We just assembled this team two weeks ago, and for them to put up such a strong showing speaks volumes. We’re in a rebuilding phase, and I believe we’ll come back stronger.”

City FC Chairman, Chidi Okonkwo, hailed the team’s progress while outlining the club’s long-term vision.

“The boys are beginning to gel, and I’m satisfied with their performance,” Okonkwo noted. “This preseason gives us an idea of where to improve ahead of the league. Our goals are clear — to integrate more young players, secure promotion to the Premier League, and build our own stadium. We’re determined to achieve all three.”

The victory capped off an impressive preseason campaign for City FC, signaling their intent to make a strong impression in the upcoming NNL season.
