Nigeria’s campaign at the 8th African Nations Championship (CHAN) came to an embarrassing end on Tuesday after a shambolic 4–0 loss to Sudan in Zanzibar.

 

The result, coming just a week after a 1–0 defeat to defending champions Senegal, confirmed the Eagles B’s early exit from the competition, regardless of the outcome of their final Group D match against Congo in Dar es Salaam next week.

 

The scoreline matched Nigeria’s heaviest defeat in the 26-year history of the tournament — a repeat of the 4–0 loss to hosts Morocco in the 2018 CHAN final.

 

Defender Leonard Ngenge, already under fire for his poor defending in Senegal’s winning goal last week, endured a nightmare performance. He opened the scoring for Sudan with an own goal in the 23rd minute before conceding a penalty shortly before half-time. Daiyeen converted from the spot to make it 2–0 at the break.

 

Nigeria’s defence collapsed completely in the second half. Yagoub Omer added a third in the 55th minute after the Falcons of Jediane sliced through the backline with ease, before sealing his brace seven minutes later with a stunning strike off the underside of the crossbar.

 

The result has sparked outrage among fans, who have described the team’s display as one of the most inept in recent memory, with little to suggest a competitive showing at any point in the match.

 

The Eagles B will face Congo in their final group game on Tuesday in what will be a mere formality.
