Police Ladies head coach Yusif Basigi says his side has taken crucial lessons from their opening defeat to Nigeria’s Bayelsa Queens in the CAF Women’s Champions League WAFU B Qualifiers, and remains optimistic about the team’s prospects in the competition.

The Ghanaian club fell 2-0 in their Group A opener, with Shakirat Moshood and Emem Essien netting for the Prosperity Girls in a match that lived up to the fierce footballing rivalry between Nigeria and Ghana.

Speaking after the game, Coach Basigi described the clash as having the intensity of a final:

“At least, this has been more or less like a final game because a match between Nigeria and Ghana is always a final irrespective of where we are starting from.”

 

Despite the loss, Basigi highlighted the improvements shown by his team in the second half as a source of encouragement.

 

“For us, we will go to the drawing board and then discuss it. From there we will continue to make amends.

We are going to continue from where we ended and move on because in the latter part of the game, I think we raised up the standard. In our subsequent matches, that is where we are going to start from.”

Police Ladies will now regroup and refocus as they prepare for their next group match, aiming to get their campaign back on track. With only the group winners advancing to the next stage of the competition, every match is critical.

 

Basigi remains confident that the setback against Bayelsa Queens will serve as a valuable springboard for improvement, as his side looks to keep their continental hopes alive.
