The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has handed down severe disciplinary sanctions against Algeria following incidents that occurred after their heated Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarter-final match against Nigeria.

 

In a statement released after reviewing reports from match officials, security officers, and disciplinary bodies, CAF confirmed a combination of sporting suspensions and substantial financial fines. The governing body cited misconduct involving Algerian players, team officials, and supporters as the basis for the punishment.

 

Sporting Sanctions

 

CAF imposed bans on two Algerian players that will take effect in upcoming international competitions:

• Luca Zidane has been suspended for two matches, a penalty that will be served during the AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign.

• Rafik Belghali received a four-match ban, with two matches suspended. As a result, he will miss Algeria’s next two competitive fixtures unless further disciplinary issues arise.

 

Financial Penalties

 

The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) has also been fined a total of $100,000 for multiple infractions during and after the match. CAF detailed the breakdown of the fines as follows:

• $5,000 for improper team conduct due to the accumulation of yellow and red cards

• $25,000 for misconduct by players and officials

• $5,000 for the use of flares inside the stadium

• $5,000 for throwing objects onto the pitch

• $10,000 for failing to comply with security regulations

• $50,000 for offensive gestures directed at match officials

 

CAF emphasized that such behavior undermines the integrity of the game and its commitment to fair play and safety at its competitions.

 

In response, the FAF has confirmed that it has lodged an official appeal, contesting both the sporting and financial sanctions and requesting a review of CAF’s decision. Further developments are expected once the appeal process is concluded.
