CAF Confederation Cup: Enyimba Stage Comeback to Draw 2-2 Against Zamalek in Uyo

Nigeria’s sole representatives in the CAF Confederation Cup, Enyimba FC of Aba, delivered a spirited performance on Sunday evening at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, fighting back from two goals down to secure a 2-2 draw with Egyptian giants Zamalek in their Group Stage clash.

The draw marked Enyimba’s first point in the mini-league phase of the competition, while Zamalek now sit on four points from two matches.

The home crowd was left shell-shocked in the first half as Zamalek raced to a 2-0 lead. Seifeddine Jaziri opened the scoring in the 33rd minute, and Omar Faraj doubled the visitors’ lead just eight minutes later.

Enyimba, however, refused to crumble. Ifeanyi Ihemekwele pulled one back during first-half stoppage time, giving the home side hope heading into the break. The comeback was completed in the 57th minute when Ufere Chinedu scored the equalizer.

Both teams had opportunities to snatch a winner, but a combination of solid goalkeeping and wayward finishing ensured the match ended in a stalemate.

The result leaves Enyimba with a tough task ahead as they look to improve their standing in the group. They will need to build on this resilient display to stay in contention for qualification to the next stage of the tournament. Meanwhile, Zamalek remain in a strong position after picking up four points from their first two games.
