Kennedy Boboye, former Nigeria international and two-time NPFL-winning coach, has resigned as head coach of Sunshine Stars, citing persistent management interference. The decision was announced following Sunshine Stars’ 1-0 defeat to Heartland FC on Sunday at the Dan Anyiam Stadium.

Boboye revealed his intentions to step down several days before the match to Heartland in Owerri , explaining that continuous meddling from club executives severely restricted his ability to lead the team effectively. “When I returned, I was promised autonomy in decision-making, but that hasn’t happened. Despite these challenges, I still managed to help the team avoid relegation last season,” Boboye stated.

He expressed frustration over executive interference in technical decisions, including specific directives on player selection by individuals with no coaching experience. “This season, the club executives even began instructing my staff on which players to field. If I’d faced this at my previous clubs, I doubt I would have won the NPFL title twice,” he added.

Sources indicate that Bamidele Ologunloluwa, Executive Chairman of the Ondo State Football Agency (ODSFA), has played a significant role in influencing player decisions. Ahead of the Heartland match, Ologunloluwa reportedly sent a directive to the technical team via WhatsApp, stating, “The Heartland match is a must-win. Drop Iwundu Dozie, drop Sodiq Ibrahim—they are not part of the team. This is my position, and I stand on it.”

In an official resignation letter set to be submitted to the Ondo State Football Agency, Boboye expressed gratitude for his time with Sunshine Stars, thanking the board, the Ondo State Governor, and the fans for their support. “Serving this organization has been both an honour and a privilege. I am deeply grateful for the trust shown in me, especially during last season’s relegation battle,” he wrote. Boboye also extended best wishes to the team, adding, “I am confident that under a new coach, Sunshine Stars will continue to progress and succeed.”

Boboye previously coached Sunshine Stars in 2015 before leading Plateau United and Akwa United to NPFL championships, an achievement that earned him coaching roles
