The Benue State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Hon. Terkimbi Ikyange, has assured that athletes from the state are receiving full support and care during the ongoing 22nd National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Speaking through Cephas Tse, a representative of the ministry, during a media parley in Abeokuta, the commissioner addressed concerns surrounding Benue’s absence at the festival’s opening ceremony. He attributed the no-show to unforeseen logistical issues.

“Our absence was not intentional,” Tse clarified. “We encountered a vehicle breakdown on the way to the festival. Although we attempted to send part of the contingent ahead, those athletes were engaged in weigh-in and other necessary preparations, which made participation in the opening ceremony impossible.”

He emphasized that Governor Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia has shown unwavering support for sports in the state, noting that the festival budget was approved promptly and all necessary logistics were provided ahead of departure.

Looking ahead, Tse said Benue’s goal remains clear: “Our target is to surpass our performance at the last edition of the festival and emerge the best in northern Nigeria. We're optimistic and focused.”
