Former Vice President and 2023 PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has reiterated that his primary goal is a better Nigeria rather than the pursuit of the presidency. The statement came during an affirmation ceremony for new defectors to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) held on Saturday in Lagos State.

 

Atiku, who recently resigned from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to join ADC alongside other opposition figures, was represented at the event by Professor Ola Olateju of Achievers University, Owo, Ondo State.

 

Speaking on behalf of Abubakar, Prof. Olateju highlighted the former vice president’s focus on national progress rather than personal ambition. “Atiku Abubakar’s plan is to build a better Nigeria. So, it’s not about him being the president. It’s about having a better government, a good government, that will be able to deliver for Nigerians,” he said.

 

He further emphasized that ADC represents more than just a political party. “ADC, to us, is not a political party. It is a movement, a movement of Nigerians for a better Nigeria,” Olateju added, underlining the movement’s aim to reposition the country for prosperity and security.

 

Abubakar’s message stresses the need for a fresh start in Nigerian politics. “It’s no longer politics as usual. It’s a new beginning. We need a new beginning in Nigeria, and that’s what Atiku is championing,” said Olateju.

 

Responding to current national challenges such as the removal of fuel subsidy and rising inflation, Abubakar expressed confidence that effective leadership can steer the country toward a brighter future. “God is ready to use the coalition members to bring about change in the country,” he affirmed.

 

Regarding the ADC’s 2027 presidential candidate, Abubakar deferred to party members to decide. “The point is a better Nigeria, not Atiku for president at all costs, not Obi for president at all costs. Whoever picks the ticket shall represent the collective voice and aspiration of Nigerians,” he stated.

 

The ceremony also witnessed the formal induction of prominent defectors into ADC, including PDP Board of Trustees member Dr. Abimbola Ogunkelu, former Lagos PDP chairmen Chief Muritala Ashorobi and Retired Capt. Tunji Shelle, PDP Vice Chairman (Lagos Central), and former PDP Youth Leader Mr. Tai Benedict.

 

The defectors were received by ADC national leaders, including National Secretary Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, Senator Kolawole Ogunwale, and Lagos State ADC Chairman George Ashiru.
