Celebrated Nigerian singer-songwriter Asa delivered a mesmerizing performance on Monday night at the opening ceremony of the 2025 National Sports Festival, lighting up the MKO Abiola International Stadium in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

As thousands of athletes, officials, and spectators gathered to kick off Nigeria’s foremost multi-sport event, Asa’s signature fusion of Afro-soul and folk music provided a stirring musical interlude. Her set included fan favorites like Jailer, Fire on the Mountain, and The Beginning, with the crowd singing along beneath the stadium’s floodlights.

Declaring the festival officially open, Governor Dapo Abiodun lauded Asa’s performance, calling it “a celebration of Nigerian talent and culture” and noting that it perfectly captured the spirit of unity, excellence, and sportsmanship the festival represents.

The evening also featured a rich showcase of cultural performances, fireworks, and a symbolic torch relay to promote peace and national unity.

The 2025 National Sports Festival — often referred to as “Nigeria’s Olympics” — brings together more than 10,000 athletes from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, competing in 38 sporting disciplines over two weeks.

Following her performance, Asa expressed her pride in contributing to the national celebration. “It’s an honor to perform in my home country and be part of something that brings Nigerians together through sports and culture,” she said.

This year marks Ogun State’s first time hosting the festival in over a decade, with the event running through May 31. With a mix of rising stars and seasoned athletes in attendance, the competition promises to be a thrilling showcase of Nigeria’s sporting talent.
