Days after his expulsion from the All Progressives Congress (APC), former Osun State governor Rauf Aregbesola met with 2023 NNPP presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso in Lagos for what was described as a “strategic meeting.”

 

The meeting, held at Aregbesola’s residence on Saturday, was confirmed by Kwankwaso in a post on X, where he stated that they discussed national politics, governance, and Nigeria’s democratic future.

 

Aregbesola’s expulsion from the APC on January 29, 2024, followed allegations of anti-party activities, particularly his role in the Osun Progressives faction, later rebranded as the Omoluabi Caucus. His group had opposed former Osun governor Gboyega Oyetola’s re-election, contributing to the APC’s loss in the 2022 Osun governorship election.

 

Meanwhile, Kwankwaso, a two-term Kano governor and former minister, remains a key political figure, having contested the 2023 presidential election under the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

 

The meeting between the two politicians has sparked speculations about possible political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections.
