The All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deregister the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

 

The call was made by the APC National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru, during a television interview on Friday.

 

Basiru said the ruling party is advocating for a reduction in the number of political parties on ballot papers, arguing that several registered parties lack the strength and national presence required to justify their continued existence.

 

According to him, Nigeria’s political space is overcrowded with parties that are largely inactive, which he said complicates the voting process and creates confusion for voters.

 

He maintained that the APC’s position is in line with constitutional provisions, noting that political parties are expected to meet certain requirements to remain registered.

 

“The constitution is clear on the conditions that must be met by political parties. Any party that fails to meet those standards should be deregistered,” Basiru stated.

 

He added that there are ongoing legal precedents supporting the removal of non-performing parties and urged INEC to exercise its authority where necessary.

 

Basiru dismissed concerns that the move could signal a drift toward a one-party system, insisting that Nigeria still has multiple active political parties.

 

“This is not about weakening opposition,” he said. “It is about ensuring order and credibility in the electoral process by allowing only serious and structured parties to remain.”

 

He also criticised some opposition groups, accusing them of lacking clear direction and focusing more on rhetoric than building viable political structures.

 

The call is likely to spark debate within the political landscape, as stakeholders weigh the balance between electoral inclusiveness and the need for a more streamlined party system ahead of 2027.
