Moves by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to undermine the 2027 re-election bid of his successor, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, appear to have suffered a setback as several All Progressives Congress (APC) governors have rallied behind the embattled governor.

 

Multiple sources within the APC confirmed to The PUNCH on Monday that the renewed hostilities between Wike and Fubara were triggered by the decision of some top APC governors to back Fubara’s second-term ambition—an endorsement that reportedly angered Wike, who is vehemently opposed to the move.

 

The situation was further intensified by the APC leadership’s public endorsement of Fubara, suggesting that the governor has managed to win the confidence of the party’s top echelon. Many party leaders have been commending Fubara’s developmental projects across Rivers State, reinforcing his growing acceptance within the APC hierarchy.

 

The support from APC governors has effectively weakened Wike’s efforts to scuttle Fubara’s re-election campaign, signaling a possible shift in political dynamics ahead of the 2027 election cycle.

 

As the rivalry between Wike and Fubara continues to dominate Rivers State politics, the new backing from APC stakeholders could further isolate Wike and complicate his strategy to influence the state’s political trajectory.

 

The Rivers State governor has yet to publicly react to the reports, and the FCT minister has also not commented on the alleged APC backing for Fubara.
