A fresh wave of political tension erupted on Saturday following a scathing response from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to statements made by Governors elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform. In a strongly worded statement released after the PDP Governors’ meeting in Zamfara State on August 23, the APC accused the opposition leaders of hypocrisy, failure, and deliberate misinformation.

 

The PDP Governors, in their communiqué, had criticized the APC-led federal government over what they described as “undemocratic practices” and “a lack of vision and agenda,” adding that Nigerians would reject the APC in the 2027 general elections. However, the ruling party swiftly countered, saying the PDP Governors’ remarks were “morbidly comical” and reflective of their party’s own decline.

 

“The PDP has since fallen into ruins and stands rejected by Nigerians,” the APC statement read. “When its Governors gather in their scanty numbers, one would expect them to focus on how to resuscitate their terminally ailing party. Instead, they waste time on frivolous allegations.”

 

The APC pointed to its victories in recent bye-elections as evidence of growing public support, arguing that Nigerians continue to embrace President Bola Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda. “Our dominant victories, even in non-APC states like Zamfara, Adamawa, and Kano, show that the electorate remains solidly behind us,” the party asserted.

 

Dismissing the PDP’s criticism of the electoral process, the APC accused the opposition of only praising elections they win, while rejecting results that do not favor them. “This double standard is anti-democratic and unacceptable,” the statement continued.

 

The ruling party also alleged that PDP-led state governments employed “state-sponsored thuggery and violence” during the bye-elections but were still roundly defeated by APC candidates. According to the APC, the election results represent “a categorical declaration of loss of confidence and rejection” of the PDP by the voting public.

 

“The PDP Governors should eat the humble pie,” the statement read. “They are betraying their own disillusioned supporters who still cling to the hope of a miracle for their party.”

 

The APC further criticized the opposition’s record, accusing the PDP of failing to provide viable policies or alternatives in recent electoral cycles and claiming that Nigeria would never return to “the dark era” when, under PDP leadership, “many state governments were bankrupt and unable to pay salaries.”

 

“President Tinubu has paved a new and clear path of prosperity for our country,” the statement concluded. “We urge Nigerians to ignore the empty and misleading rhetoric of these detractors, and stand firm with the President and our great Party as we move forward into a future of shared prosperity.”

 

The PDP is yet to issue a formal response to the APC’s statement as of the time of this report.
