Former Nigeria striker, Benedict Akwuegbu, has revealed reasons he prefers Emmanuel Amuneke, MFR, as Super Eagles Coach, Exclusivenews.com.ng reports.

Akwuegbu, who is fondly called 'Austria Bomber', spoke to Exclusivenews.com.ng from his base in London, saying that aside having an exceptionally illustrious playing career, Amuneke posses an inviting and humane disposition that brings many together.

"When we're in the national team together, Amuneke encouraged me a lot", Akwuegbu began. "He also did same to many others.

"Amuneke has a quiet disposition. He brings many close to him and offers helping hand when and where necessary. He's such a fantastic person, I must say.

"Amuneke was so prayerful and always led us in sing-songs especially when we're in the bus or before training. 

"These are attitude and mentality required to build a strong Super Eagles team. As a coach, Amuneke has proved himself, winning the FIFA U-17 World Cup for Nigeria in Chile 2015. He produced the likes of Victor Osimhen and Samuel Chukwueze amongst other great players. It's only normal for such a great coach to lead the senior National Team".

Akwuegbu who once founded Mbaise Lions FC and Imo Lions FC currently owns Akwuegbu FC, Jos. After his playing career, Akwuegbu served as Heartland FC Assistant General Manager. 

Akwuegbu realised early enough that life after football could be challenging, hence he veered into education and studied Mental Nursing and is currently doing his Masters Program in the United Kingdom.

The 'Austria Bomber' named Tijani Babangida, Garba Lawal and Mutiu 'Head Master' Adepoju as former Super Eagles players in the class of Amuneke.

He also commended the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, under Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau, for last minute efforts that saw Super Eagles finish second in Group C of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

"Now, with the opportunity of playing I the World Cup qualification play offs, Super Eagles now have a chance of qualifying for the World Cup in 2026. Its credit to the NFF leadership under Ibrahim Gusau", Akwuegbu concluded.
