Akwa United Star Player Graduates With First Class
Akwa United Star Paulinus Okon Makes History with First-Class Degree
Akwa United’s attacking midfielder, Paulinus Okon, has set a remarkable record by becoming the first student to graduate with First Class Honours in Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering from the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Uyo.
Okon achieved an impressive Cumulative Grade Points Average (CGPA) of 4.50 and was named the 2021/2022 Best Graduating Student in his department during the university’s 29th/30th convocation ceremonies in Uyo.
The talented left-footed midfielder began his football journey with Eagle Eye Football Academy, later excelling for his local government team, Nsit Atai, during the 2023 Akwa Ibom State Governor’s Cup. His performance earned him a spot at FC One Rocket in the Nigeria National League before joining reigning league champions Akwa United for the 2024/25 season.
Although yet to make his competitive debut for Akwa United, Okon has been actively participating in the team’s training sessions. Coach Muhammed Babaganaru described him as “an exceptionally gifted player” with immense potential.
In an interview, Okon shared his struggles and triumphs in balancing football and academics.
“Combining football and higher education was incredibly challenging. I’ve faced accidents, sleepless nights, and even discouragement from lecturers who thought I was on a ‘suicide mission.’ But I believed in myself and stayed determined,” he said.
Despite the obstacles, Okon defied expectations, becoming the first in his department’s history to achieve a First Class degree.
“When I asked about the possibility of graduating with First Class in my first year, I was told it was impossible—especially for someone combining football with academics. But I worked hard, and today, I’ve made history. I thank God for the journey,” he added.
Now armed with academic excellence and a budding professional career, Okon is confident about his future in football, saying, “My time will soon come, and I’m ready to make a significant impact as a professional player.”
