Akwa United Football Club has officially confirmed its relegation from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) following the conclusion of the 2024–25 season, marking a painful end to a 14-year spell in the top flight.

In a statement released by the club’s management, Akwa United expressed deep disappointment over the team’s performance and apologized to its fans, supporters, sponsors, and the people of Akwa Ibom State for failing to maintain its Premier League status.

“We fought hard as a club throughout the season to get into our rhythm,” the statement read. “But our results, especially at home, were not good enough as we dropped 18 points on home turf and managed just 5 points on the road.”

 

The club, which has enjoyed notable success in recent years—including FA Cup triumphs in 2015 and 2017 and a historic league title in 2021—said the relegation was both “hugely disappointing and embarrassing.”

 

Despite the setback, the club called for unity and resilience. “Now is the time to demonstrate love, strength and unity more than ever going forward,” the statement said, as the club looks to regroup and rebuild in the Nigeria National League (NNL) next season.

 

Akwa United also acknowledged the unwavering support from the Akwa Ibom State Government, singling out Governor Pastor Umo Bassey Eno and Commissioner for Sports Elder Paul Bassey for their encouragement. The management pledged its full commitment to returning the club to the Premier League.

 

“We have gone this path before and rallied back to the top,” the statement continued. “Next season may not be an exception by the grace of God.”

 

The club concluded by thanking its loyal supporters, sponsors, and partners for their continued belief and support, promising to restore the pride and glory of Akwa United Football Club in the seasons ahead.
