Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has revealed that his future with the Nigerian national team will be decided by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), following the team’s elimination from the semi-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

 

Chelle made the disclosure while addressing the sporting media immediately after Nigeria’s dramatic semi-final defeat to host nation Morocco on Wednesday night in Rabat. The Super Eagles were knocked out 4–2 on penalties after a tense goalless draw that lasted 120 minutes.

 

“To continue or not is not my decision alone,” Chelle said. “I am proud of my players, but also disappointed because I truly believe we are the best team in this tournament.”

 

The former Mali international confirmed that he is willing and eager to continue as head coach of Nigeria’s senior national team, but stressed that final decisions rest with the NFF. According to him, a post-tournament review meeting with the federation will determine whether he remains in charge.

 

“I want to continue this project,” Chelle stated. “But we will sit down with the NFF after the competition and discuss the future.”

 

Chelle has overseen a notable transformation of the Super Eagles since taking charge just over a year ago, instilling tactical discipline and building a competitive, well-organised squad. Under his leadership, Nigeria have shown consistency and resilience, emerging as one of the most balanced sides at AFCON 2025.

 

However, recent results have brought heartbreak rather than silverware. Nigeria have now suffered two painful penalty shootout defeats under Chelle’s watch—first against the Democratic Republic of Congo in the CAF World Cup playoff final, and now against Morocco in the AFCON semi-final.
