The National Stadium, Abuja has been renamed Moshood Abiola National Stadium by Presidential flat in honor of the June 1993 Nigerian general election, Basorun Moshood Kashimawo Abiola.
President Muhammadu Buhari announced this at the special parade marking the first Democracy Day in Nigeria at the Eagle Square in Abuja.
Speaking before a mammoth crowd which included Foreign leaders, Nigerian dignitaries among who were the new Senate President Ahmed Lawan and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila he said he saw injustice in the handling of the June 12, 1993 elections.
President Buhari explained that that was why he conferred on Abiola the highest honor in Nigeria, the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR) on 20 years of democracy.
The National Stadium, Abuja was built by the Obasanjo Administration in 2002 to host the All Africa Games in 2003.
The 60,000 capacity Stadium has other complexes like the first Velodrome in West Africa, Indoor Sports Hall, Shooting range, Olympic size swimming pool and many other facilities.
It was constructed by Julius Berger firm.
