The Abia State University Uturu (ABSU) contingent to the 5th South East University Games (SEUGA) that held at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, has brought back one silver, 5 bronze medals in Chess, Scrabble and football respectively.

Presenting the medals to the Vice-Chancellor in his office, the team leader and President South East SEUGA, Dr Felix Obiukwu, thanked the Vice-Chancellor for his support and explained that in football, ABSU defeated FUTO 2-1, lost to ESUT 0-1 and drew against UNIZIK thus qualifying for the semi finals, where they lost on penalties to UNN, but won against FUNAI for the third place match to cart home the bronze medal.

He further stated that the ABSU University team also received award as the best behaved team of the tournament.

In his response, the Vice-Chancellor, Distinguished, Professor Onyemachi M. Ogbulu, who was visibly elated during the presentation, commended the ABSU team on behalf of the Governing Authorities of the University for their gallant performance  and charged them to go for gold in subsequent competitions and assured of the support of his administration.

The Vice-Chancellor used the forum to recall the recent impressive performance of the University in the 2023 bar examination of the Nigerian law school Abuja,  where seven (7) graduates of the University recorded first class, coming on the heels of the exploits of the graduating Nurses of the University who scored 95.14% in the Nursing and Midwifery Council Examination and 97.14% in the Public Health Nursing Council examination, as well as the 99% success of the students of Optometry at the Nigerian Optometric and Dispensing Opticians Registration board examination, all within a space of few months under his administration.

He commended the Executive Governor of Abia State and Visitor to the University, Dr Chioma Alex Otti OFR for providing a conducive environment for Teaching, learning and research in the University, assuring that the administration under his watch will continue to encourage and promote the spirit of Excellence established by the founding fathers.

Other principal officers of the University  including the chairman, Senate committee on sports,  Professor Udo Nwokocha were present during the meeting.
