Abia State's athletes have made a significant impact at the ongoing National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State, with an impressive haul of 28 medals. According to Comrade Obioma George, Director of Sports, this achievement is a direct result of the state's focus on grassroots talent discovery .

*Medal Breakdown:*

- _6 Gold Medals_ in Athletics, Kung-fu, Weightlifting, and Kickboxing
- _11 Silver Medals_ in Table Tennis, Gymnastics, Shooting, Taekwondo, and Boxing
- _11 Bronze Medals_ in Judo, Rugby, Squash, Kokowa, and Taekwondo

Comrade Obioma George attributed the success to the state's secondary schools sports festival, which identified talented athletes from 17 local government areas. One athlete even won three gold medals in their first major competition, just six months after being scouted. 

To retain these athletes, Abia State plans to provide top-notch welfare packages and immediate camping for the upcoming National Sports Festival.

Comrade Obioma George also commended Delta State for hosting the National Youth Games and encouraged organizers to address age cheating issues.

Governor Alex Otti's commitment to sports development has been instrumental in Abia State's success. The state's Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba, has also played a crucial role.
