2027: I will Continue To Support Peter Obi….Farotimi

Prominent human rights lawyer and political activist, Dele Farotimi, has reiterated his support for former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, ahead of the 2027 presidential election, stating that Obi remains his preferred candidate—provided no stronger alternative emerges.
Farotimi, a vocal critic of Nigeria’s political status quo and former spokesperson for the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council in 2023, made the remarks during an interview on Channels Television.
“If elections where our votes will count were to hold today, I will vote for Peter Gregory Obi, unless somebody else comes into the race that I think can do better,” he said. “If it’s still the same lineup as the last time, it’s definitely Peter Obi I’m voting for.”
While expressing hope that Obi would be “a little bolder” with his policy proposals, Farotimi emphasized that in terms of “capacity and integrity,” no other candidate currently commands his support.
He, however, cautioned that certain political alignments could alter his stance. “Something drastic has to happen for me to decide I’m not supporting Peter Obi. He might team up with some objectionable persons that I cannot stomach—that’s a real possibility. However, outside of that, there’s nobody else.”
Despite reaffirming his commitment, Farotimi criticized the growing focus on the 2027 elections, describing such discussions as premature and potentially distracting from Nigeria’s more urgent systemic challenges.
“I actually think our discussions of elections today are a disservice to ourselves because we really cannot speak in terms of an election in our current circumstances,” he added.
Farotimi’s continued endorsement of Obi reflects ongoing public interest in the Labour Party figure, whose 2023 campaign galvanized a large youth following and disrupted Nigeria’s traditional political landscape.
