The 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) may be postponed following a formal request by the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) to the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

 

In a letter to CAF, the Moroccan football body cited its inability to host the tournament as scheduled next month, blaming severe congestion in the country’s domestic football calendar.

 

Morocco’s top-flight Botola Pro League has faced repeated disruptions in recent months due to the hosting of major international competitions, including the African Nations Championship (CHAN), the Arab Cup and the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). These events, the FRMF said, have placed significant logistical and operational strain on the country’s football infrastructure.

 

As a result, the federation has formally requested that CAF reschedule the women’s tournament to a later date to allow for better planning and coordination.

 

Although CAF has yet to issue an official statement, discussions are reportedly ongoing between the continental body and the Moroccan authorities on a revised timetable for the competition.

 

The 2026 WAFCON is expected to be highly competitive and strategically important, as the four semi-finalists will secure automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil. This makes the tournament a critical gateway for African women’s national teams aiming to reach the global stage.
