With the 2025/2026 Nigeria National League (NNL) season set to kick off on November 7, the NNL inspection team, led by the league’s chairman Mr. George Aluo, visited McCarthy Stadium in Makurdi on Thursday to assess its readiness to host the league’s opening fixture between Lobi Stars and City FC of Abuja.

 

Speaking after the inspection, Mr. Aluo acknowledged the quality of the playing surface but expressed concern over the general state of other essential infrastructure within the stadium.

 

“We’re here in Makurdi to assess the preparedness of the state to host the league opener,” Aluo said. “From what we saw on ground, the playing turf is in perfect condition, but the stadium lacks other critical facilities required to host such a high-profile match.”

 

The NNL chairman confirmed that the league board has provided the Benue State government with a comprehensive list of facility upgrades needed. A two-week deadline has been issued to address the deficiencies before final approval is granted to host the opening match.

Responding to the concerns, Benue State Commissioner for Sports, Hon. Tiza Imojime, and State FA Chairman, Barr. Paul Edeh, assured the NNL officials of the state’s commitment to meeting the deadline and completing all necessary upgrades in time for the match.

 

“We have taken note of all your concerns and wish to assure you that they will be addressed promptly,” Hon. Imojime said. “The stadium will be ready, and Lobi Stars will play all their home matches here in Makurdi this season.”

While optimistic about Benue State’s ability to meet the requirements, the NNL is not leaving anything to chance. Mr. Aluo confirmed that an alternative venue has been placed on standby in case McCarthy Stadium fails to meet the set standards within the stipulated timeframe.

 

“The league must kick off as scheduled on November 7,” Aluo emphasized. “We are hopeful, but we also have to prepare for any eventuality.”

The fixture between Lobi Stars, one of the most followed clubs in the NNL, and City FC of Abuja, a rising force in Nigerian football, is expected to draw significant attention and set the tone for the new season. The league board’s insistence on proper infrastructure is part of broader efforts to improve the professionalism, safety, and quality of the second-tier league in Nigeria.

 

With the countdown to kickoff already underway, all eyes will now be on Benue State as stakeholders await swift action and full compliance with NNL standards.
