The Federal Government has highly commended the Nigerian contingent to the 2019 World Para Athletics Grand Prix in Tunis for their laudable podium performance and winning of Medals.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, Mr Adesola Olusade said the team which comprised four athletes and five officials won 10 medals to finish 5th on the medals table at the competition held on 28- 30th , June 2019.
At the competition, Flora Ugwunwa won GOLD in Javelin and Silver in Discus.
Similarly, Lauritta Onye was another member of the team that did Nigeria proud in Tunis. Having won Silver in the women’s F40 Shot Put event , the former WR holder whose heroics at Rio 2016 Paralympics brought her to fame, went on to win GOLD at her first ever competition in Javelin with a distance of 18.89m. She won Silver in Discuss, winning a total of Three Medals.
Also, Unyime Uwak was not left out of the medals haul as she sped to a Silver medal in the T46 class of the women’s 100m and upgraded to GOLD in the 200m, where she held dominance.
A newcomer Ifeanyi Christian won an unprecedented three GOLD medals in what was his first was ever outing for Nigeria. The Making of Champions (MOC) athlete struck GOLD at the competition to dominate the T46/47 category of the men’s 100m, 200m and 400m respectively.
All four athletes have qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, and will be looking forward to representing the country at the 2019 IPC World Championships holding in Dubai in November.
The Team made up of five athletes and four officials, was led by the President of Nigeria Para-Athletics Federation, Dr. Chikwendu Amobi, the Secretary General, Bidemi-BRT Opolo, and two coaches, Ojor-Stadium Peter and Hyacinth Anejo.
