Despite the fact that Group A of the All African Games Women’s football will be decided today to know the semifinalists, the focus is on Group B where Nigeria’s Falconets are. Hosts Morocco faces Mali and Algeria tackles Equatorial Guinea the group final games.
Generally, results of women’s matches are not forth coming but Morocco thrashed Algeria 3-2 in the opening encounter.
The soccer hostility between Nigeria and South Africa in all age group games is conspicuous at the AAG. On the two occasions that Nigeria won female soccer gold, South Africa’s Bayana Bayana were the fulcrum for Nigeria’s glory. Four times have the women played soccer. The first in 2003 in Abuja saw Nigeria narrowly defeat South Africa 1-0. Cameroon won bronze 1-0 over Mali. At Algiers, Algeria in 2007, Nigeria beat South Africa silly 4-0 to take away the gold; Ghana then spanked hosts Algeria 3-1 to take the bronze.
Already at Rabat, Morocco the Bayana Bayana was walloped 3-0 by Nigeria before Nigeria played 1-1 with Cameroon. Reports say the last group match against Zambia tomorrow is a formality as the Falconets have sailed to the semis. Cameroon will slug it out with South Africa for honors.
The semifinal is slated for Tuesday same day the Men’s Teams will play their semi.
Cameroon’s only AAG female title was at Mozambique in 2011 where the Lioness piped Ghana 1-0 in the finals and Algeria drubbed South Africa 3-0 to win the bronze. The defending champions, Ghana who won their only AAG title in Brazzaville, Congo in 2015 are absent at this competition. That year Ghana defeated Cameroon 1-0 and Ivory Coast, also not in this competition beat Nigeria 2-1 to cart home the bronze.
