Before the Matchday 3 fixtures, the state of Umuahia Township stadium was a talking point in the social media, as there were calls from various quarters that the Abia Warriors FC should be relocated to an alternative venue.
But Sports journalists who thronged the Umuahia Township Stadium to watch the encounter between Abia Warriors and Lobi Stars were stunned by the high levels of hatred that has been exhibited towards the Umuahia outfit.
In a message, a renowned sports journalist said “My name is Tunde Liadi and a renowned name in the Nigerian league reportage with close to two decades of experience. I have been NPFL Match Delegates for years.
I have heard so much discussions on the social media about the present state of the Umuahia Township Stadium which is the home ground of Abia Warriors and I decided to go see things for myself on Sunday, January 22nd, 2023 in their home game with Lobi Stars.
The stadium pitch was in good condition and lush green and there was no complaint from the visiting team who even emerged victorious at the end of the game. Social media noise about the state of the stadium’s turf is fueled by those that have not visited the stadium to see its current state and are only engagung in mere rumour mongering from afar. I spoke with the Umuahia Township Stadium stadium manager at the end of the game and he confirmed that the pitch would be wet at the end of the game to keep it in shape. The stadium pitch is fit and in good condition to host Abia Warriors’ home games”. He commended the pragmatic steps of the leadership of the Interim Management Committee (IMC)
Another veteran journalist Jack Moses Ekwe Ekwe advised those criticizing the Umuahia Township Stadium to visit the place and see the efforts the Management have put to the stadium “there is nothing wrong with that stadium. It is suitable for any league match. It is only those who would want to fathom an excuse will be criticizing the pitch. It is a good pitch, and everyone should allow Abia Warriors to be”. He advised the leadership of IMC to visit the stadium and see things themselves.
