Nasarawa United Remain Unmoved Despite Loss to Akwa United

Nasarawa United’s quest to move to the top of the Nigeria Professional Football League table suffered a minor setback on Thursday afternoon after they were beaten 2-1 by their hosts, Akwa United, in the matchday 30 clash at the God’swill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, Akwa-Ibom State.

Silas Nwankwo muscled his way through the forest of legs in the 27th minute and almost scored the opener but his shot came with no power in it.

It was the home side that first took the lead in the half hour mark through Samuel Amadi’s freekick.

Four minutes later, Nasarawa United had their chance to draw level squandered, with defender, Austin Uzochukwu, heading the ball over the bar in front of an empty post after the Akwa United defence was unable to clear out Haggai Katoh’s corner kick.

The Promise Keepers increased their tally to 2-0 in the additional time of the first-half courtesy of Marshal Johnson’s header off Etboy Akpan’s cross-in as the home side went into the break leading the Solid Miners.

Nasarawa United came smoking in the second half, with Dauda Maigishiri finding the unrushing Chigozie Obasi only for the latter’s shot to go haywire.

The visitors conceded a penalty in the 77th minute after Samson Gbadebo brought down substitute, Adamu Hassan, inside the area.

The former Kano Pillars’ hitman stepped up and calmly sent the goalkeeper, Adewale Adeyinka, the wrong way, to hand Nasarawa United a lifeline, his fifth goal of the current campaign.

But the scoreline would remain that way until regulation time, as Akwa United open a four points gap over the Solid Miners to remain on top of the league table, while the Lafia-based side remain unmoved on the second position with 52 points.

Nasarawa United will play-host to visiting Jigawa Golden Stars on Monday, 5th July, at the Lafia City Stadium.
