The Chairperson of the Nigeria Women Football League, Aisha Falode, has expressed joy over the successful conclusion of the Nigeria Women Premier League Abridged format, which graciously extended to the Super 4 after the September 11 & 12 conclusion of matches, with conspicuous improved standard of play.
Falode noted that, the improved standard of the league was witnessed by Nigerian football followers across the country, and outside as they closely followed the NWPL Week 6 games in the 16 venues across Nigeria with keen interest, as the last league games ended in a world-class photo finish.
“It gives me joy in my heart that, the NWPL this time around met the international standard associated with top football leagues across the world, when teams that will qualify for the Super 4 were not confirmed until the end of the last games in all the four groups.
“Some others for relegation playoffs were still not known until after the final whistle. That ofcourse tells a lot about the high standard which the board of the Nigeria Women Football League has taken women’s football to, not only in Nigeria but also in Africa.
“For the NWPL to come out this way, kudos must be given to the players and officials of the clubs. The most striking among them all, was one of the privately owned clubs, FC Robo of Lagos, that fought to the last whistle before a clear leader emerged in Group A where they played against established clubs like Rivers Angels, the eventual winner in the group and Delta Queens. Even Osun Babes are no push overs in the catalogue of top teams in Nigeria.
“I want to use this opportunity to commend the management of the other private clubs in the Premier League: Invincible Angels and Dream Stars. When compared with the state-owned clubs, we know the enormous job they are doing.”
Falode, did not leave out the resolute Nigeria Referees Association headed by Otunba Tade Azeez, for ensuring perfect appointments of top class women referees for the league.
“When we started recording away victories and draws at the early part of the league, we knew we were in for a very interesting season, which it turned out to be eventually.
The astuteness of the NWFL Secretariat headed by Alhaji Ayo Abdulrahman, a legendary league expert, contributed immensely to the success of the league.
“The ever present media which gave the NWPL overwhelming coverage in all sector of the industry, throughout the abridged league season, were just too good to ignore. The last but not the least, the women’s football supporters who followed the league matches, were also instrumental to the success of the abridged league this season.
“Today, we give kudos to the board of the Nigeria Football Federation for the support and encouragement always.”
The NWFL boss who is also a board member of the Nigeria Football Federation, disclosed that the success of the abridged league will be improved upon in the Super 4, which had provided the four best clubs in the country. The date and venue of the Super 4 will be communicated to the public very soon.
