President Muhammadu Buhari has reacted to the Supreme Court’s verdict on the July 16, 2022, gubernatorial election in Osun State.
The apex sitting in Abuja on Tuesday, May 9, 2023, affirmed the election of Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the Governor of Osun State.
The judgement followed an earlier decision by a three-member panel of the appellate court led by Mohammed Shuaibu, which affirmed his victory, nullifying the judgement of the election petition tribunal.
The election petition tribunal had in January this year nullified the governor’s victory.
Adegboyega Oyetola, the immediate-past governor of the state, had filed a petition challenging Adeleke’s victory.
Reacting, President Buhari said that with the final decision by the court, the political class and its supporters should be reminded that the “main task at hand is to make the people feel the impact of good governance, where a prosperous, peaceful, and stable Osun is guaranteed.”
In a statement issued by his spokesman, Femi Adesina, the president urged all citizens and residents of the state to give Adeleke all the support needed to “ensure that programmes, policies, plans, and aspirations fashioned to make individuals and businesses flourish succeed.”
Buhari said: “Elections should be seen as the path to an end, which is the progress of the people in a peaceful environment, rather than unending bickering. This is the time for inclusion and harmony in the state at the end of litigation.”
Meanwhile, Ademola Adeleke has described his victory at the Supreme Court as the establishment of God’s authority and supremacy.
He said the will of God has survived the anti-masses plot of evil forces.
