Factors have started emerging on why the newly elected President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Ahmed Bola Tinubu lost Lagos to the Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi in the 2023 Presidential election.
According to final result released by INEC, Obi polled 582,454, while his closest All Progressives Party (APC) challenger and former governor of Lagos state Bola Ahmed Tinubu got 572,606, while Atiku Abubakar of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) came distant third with 75,750.
While Obi cleared nine Local Government Areas (LGAs)with higher margin, Tinubu won in 11 LGAs with lower number of votes.
The LGAs won by Obi are Ajeromi-Ifelodun, Amuwo-Odofin, Eti-Osa, Ikeja, Kosofe, Oshodi-Isolo, Somolu, Ojo and Alimosho
Tinubu triumphed in Agege, Apapa, Badagry, Epe, Ibeju-Lekki, Ifako-Ijaiye, Ikorodu, Lagos Island, Lagos Mainland, and Surulere.
Emerging facts revealed that five major factors worked against the former Governor of Lagos State who had been in total control of the state for over two decades.
Topmost of the facts are his alleged role in the End SARS saga where many lives were lost. Another was the role of the churches that campaigned openly against his Muslim Muslim ticket and urged their members to vote against the decision. The third factor was the Ambode factor which some Lagosians are still holding against him. The last was the ethnicity issue. It very evident that there are more visitors in Lagos than any other part of the country.
