CHAN 2020: West African Teams Top The Qualifiers List

West Africa will still call the shot at the 2020 CHAN holding in Cameroun, despite the non qualification of the assumed football power houses from the sub region for the biennal tournament.

It will be recalled that last weekend, countries like Nigeria, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Ghana could not make from the final qualifiers.

Among the 16 qualifiers, West Africa will produce five countries among which are Togo, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Niger and Mali. They will be followed by East Africa that have Uganda, Zimbabwe, Tanzania and Rwanda. Central Africa sub region will be represented host Cameroun, Congo and Congo DR. Northern Africa will have Morocco and Tunisia, while only Namibia is coming from South African Sub region.

In final qualifying matches played at the weekend, Nigeria lost out 4-3 to Togo on aggregate; despite winning 2-0 courtesy of a Sikiru Alimi brace, making the Hawks of Togo book a place in the group phase of next year’s CHAN; their first appearance since the inception of the tournament. Lesotho and Zimbabwe settled for a goalless draw as Zimbabwe qualified after a 1-3 aggregate win.

Two goals from Joel Beya, and a goal each from Kikasa Wamba, and Jackson Muleka gave DR Congo a 4-1 win against Central Africa as they qualified 6-1 on aggregate.

Burkina Faso made it to CHAN 2020 at the expense of Ghana after a goalless draw in Accra, and a 1-0 win in the first leg.

Mali advanced to the final tournament of the CHAN 2020 in Cameroon after a 2-0 win over Mauritania with (Agg. 2-0). Goals from Mamadou Coulibaly, Aly Desse Sissoko gave Mali the win.

Libya couldn’t qualify against Tunisia as they lost 1-2 in the second leg of CHAN qualifier final round. Ahmed Moksi scored a penalty for Libya but Anice Badri brace sealed it for Tunisia to make it 1-3 on aggregate.

Ivory Coast was another big team that failed to make it to the final tournament in Cameroon next year as their 1-0 over Niger was not enough to qualify. They lost 1-2 on aggregate.

Guinea won Senegal 3-1 on penalties to book their place in the final tournament in Cameroon. The game had ended 1-0 in favour of Guinea after Mamadouba Bangoura scored to make it 1-1 on aggregate.

CHAN is a tournament exclusively reserved for the locally based players plying their trade in the respective domestic leagues in Africa.

Morocco won the last edition in 2018 beating Nigeria 4-0 in the final.
