
The Squirrels of Benin stressed, shocked and sent home the Lions of Morocco in the first of the round of 16 matches of the Cup of Nations.
Officiating was terrible and the match had to hold severally because of protests from the Benin players. The protests attracted wild yellow cards from the ref especially when CAF officials came from the stands to persuade Benin to continue with the match.
Morocco was awarded a controversial penalty in the 90+2 minutes but it was kicked to the upright bar. K. Adenou of Benin was red carded in 97′ but defender Adeoti escaped the red.
M. Adilehou scored from a corner kick 53′ before Y. En-Nesyri 75′ and scores remained so for 120′ of play before Benin won 4-1 on penalties.
Benin will meet winners between Senegal and Uganda in the quarterfinal. It is the first time Benin will play in the quarterfinal.
The fouls were 14-29 of Benin; 2-3 yellows.
