Athletics Takes Center Stage As 2023 Diocese On The Niger Bishop Owen Nwokolo Secondary Schools Sports Competition Enters Day Two

The 2023 edition of the Diocese On the Niger Bishop Owen Nwokolo Secondary Schools Sports Competition enters day two today with Athletics taking the center stage, Exclusivenews.com.ng reports.

The track and field event of the competition is billed for the All Saints Anglican Cathedral field, Onitsha while The Basilica, Central School field, of St Andrew’s Anglican Church is venue for football event.

The Diocese On the Niger has continued to design sporting programs to keep alive the physical and mental shape of its adherents the way it uses gospel to strengthen the spiritual life of the members in a bold bid to draw and keep them to God.

The five-day Competition which kicked off on Tuesday, May 23, will end on Saturday, 27 May,,2023.

Amongst events slated for Wednesday include Athletics, Volleyball, Badminton, Tennis, Chess and Scrabble.

According to Sir Victor Nwangwu, Head, Sports of the Education Department of the Diocese On the Niger, Wednesday’s Athletics highlight include 1,500m Final (Girls), 400m – Heats (Boys), 400m – Heats(Girls),
100m – Heats(Boys), Shot Put – Final (Girls), 800m – (Boys), 200m – Heats (Boys) and 200 – Heats (Girls).

“After that, there will be a short break before resumption with 400m – Heats (Boys), 400m – Heats (Girls), 4x100m Relay Heats (Boys) and 4×100 Relay Heats (Girls)”, Nwangwu explained.

In the football event with Central School field, Basilica, as venue, Awada, represented by Patterson Memorial Grammar School, will slug it out with St Pauls Nkpor, Flying the flag of New Covenant.

The fixture is billed for 9 in the morning and will be preceded the clash involving Ascension versus

Cathedral represented by Dennis Memorial Grammar School, DMGS, Onitsha.

After that, Abatete will file out,against Onitsha Central represented by Arch Bishop Onyemelukwe Secondary School.

On Tuesday, on the opening day of the competition, New Covenant, represented by St Paul’s Nkpor, defeated Onitsha South flag bearers,
St Johns Fegge 1-0.

Divine Grace who represented St Christopher’s 3-3 defeated St Marks Omagba 2-0 just as DMGS who are Onitsha Cathedral pegged Hallowed Ground 3-1.

Oyi Central lost to Oba 0-3 just as Arch Bishop Onyemelukwe of Onitsha Central defeated St Andrews Obosi 3-0.
